Flavored syrups typically consist of a simple syrup, that is sugar (fully mixed with water while heated), with naturally occurring or artificial (synthesized) flavorings also dissolved in them. A sugar substitute may also be used. Syrups are typically transparent or translucent in appearance, with a thick, syrupy consistency. The active ingredient in the syrup is evenly dispersed throughout the liquid, giving it a uniform appearance. Suspensions, on the other hand, can appear cloudy or opaque, with visible particles suspended in the liquid. Flavored syrups are very simple to make. They are a combination of sugar, water and high quality extracts and flavorings. Begin with a basic simple syrup recipe; a one-to-one ratio of sugar and water simmered over medium heat until the sugar dissolves.
